Airfix 1:72nd Scale WWII Nakajima B5N2 'Kate' Plastic Model Kit

Airfix 1:72nd Scale WWII Nakajima B5N2 'Kate' Plastic

The Nakajima B5N2 'Kate' was the most numerous Japanese torpedo bomber of the Second World War and while primarily operated as a torpedo bomber from carriers, it also saw service as a land based bomber. A single engine monoplane, it was defended by just one rearward firing machine gun, operated by the radio operator, and its relatively low speed left it vulnerable to enemy fighters, performing well at Pearl Harbour and going on to have success at the Battle of the Coral Sea and Midway.

Painting Wargaming Figures: WWII in the Desert

Painting Wargaming Figures: WWII in the

Andy Singleton has been modelling and painting most of his life and has been a professional commission figure painter for some years now. Here he shares his experience and tips of the trade with those collecting figures for the North African campaigns in WWII. The four main sections of the book cover British, Italian, German and US troops, as well as tips on assembly and painting camouflage uniforms. Each section is divided into three levels of complexity, ‘conscript’, ‘regular’ and ‘elite’, allowing the reader to build up an array of techniques as they gain confidence and experience. The emphasis is on achievable results and practical advice that is applicable to painting units or whole armies for wargaming purposes in a reasonable time frame, not on spectacular individual display pieces. Most of the figures featured in the numerous illustrations are sized either 28mm or 20mm but the techniques described are easily adaptable to smaller sizes and both plastic and metal figures are covered. Andy’s clear, step-by-step guidance takes the reader through the process from the initial preparation and assembly of the figure, to finishing and basing.

Airfix 1:72nd Scale WWII Bristol Beaufighter TF.X Plastic Model Kit

Airfix 1:72nd Scale WWII Bristol Beaufighter TF.X Plastic

The Bristol Beaufighter was a WWII British long range heavy fighter, developed from the earlier Beaufort design. Featuring two powerful Bristol Hercules engines, the aircraft gained a fearsome reputation for being both fast and able to deliver a powerful blow from its four 20mm cannons and a choice of either Torpedo or Rocket projectiles. Although developed to be a fighter, and used successfully as a night fighter, it was the TF.X Coastal Command version that was most successful; its range and power enabling it to take a heavy toll of Axis shipping.

Airfix WWII Armstrong Whitworth Whitley Mk.V Plastic Model

The Armstrong Whitworth Whitley was one of three twin engine RAF medium bombers in service at the outbreak of the Second World War. Despite its slow speed, poor service ceiling and small bomb load the Whitley was an important type for the RAF in this period, forming the backbone of the early night bombing offense. Later in the war it was used both by Coastal Command and as a glider tug.

Airfix Mitsubishi A6M2b Zero 1 72 Scale Plastic Model Plane A01005A

Airfix Mitsubishi A6M2b Zero 1 72 Scale Plastic

When the Japanese Zero first entered service in 1940, it was without doubt the most advanced naval fighter in the world and quickly earned a reputation as a ruthless dogfighter. In early engagements, the Zero proved so effective that pilots were able to post an almost unbelievable victory ratio of 12 to 1 against their adversaries. As the Wehrmacht began its march across Europe in 1940, little attention was being given to developments in the Far East. Following years of re-arming and upgrading, the Japanese Navy could boast some of the most advanced naval aircraft in the world within its inventory, including the superb Mitsubishi A6M Zero. This long range Naval fighter would be at the forefront of Japan expansionist ambitions throughout WWII and in the early war years, proved to be unequalled in the Pacific region. Possessing exceptional maneuverability, the Zero quickly earned a reputation as a dogfighter and Allied pilots quickly learned to avoid a slow, turning fight with this beautifully balanced aircraft. As the fighter aircraft to beat in the Pacific, American pilots soon developed tactics that avoided playing into the hands of the Zero and began to score victories. As newer fighters began to enter service, the A6M Zero began to show its weaknesses, which were a lack of arm...

Airfix Super Marine Spitfire MK VA 1:72 Military Aircraft Plastic Model Kit

Airfix Super Marine Spitfire MK VA 1:72 Military

Without doubt, the Super marine Spitfire was one of the most important aircraft of WWII, with more being produced that any other British aircraft type – it was also in production throughout the war. The Mk.V version of the Spitfire was produced in greater numbers than any other mark and gave the RAF a combat advantage throughout most of 1941. Entering service with No.92 Squadron at Biggins Hill, the Spitfire Va was powered by the new Merlin 45 engine and incorporated the ‘a' wing, which retained the eight machine gun armament of earlier machines. Pitted against the Messerschmitt Bf 109F, the Spitfire Va proved to be superior at higher altitudes and was generally more heavily armed. As the most produced version, the Spitfire mark V saw significant development during its service career.

Airfix A03087 Junkers JU87B-1 Stuka 1:72 Military Aircraft

The Junkers Ju87 Stuka quickly became one of the most infamous, and feared weapons of the Second World War. The two-man dive bomber first saw action in the skies over Spain during the Spanish Civil War. While outdated in appearance the Stuka did contain some modern features such as automatic dive brakes but overall the design was outmoded. Over the skies of Poland, France and the Low Countries in 1940 the Stuka was able to operate in clear skies and did so effectively but over the South of England during the Battle of Britain, the Stuka came up against staunch RAF fighter opposition, and suffered as a result. Later the Stuka was used in the Balkans and the Western Desert, and continued to serve Russia, as a tank destroyer, until the end of the Second World War.

P-47 Thunderbolt Aces of the Ninth and Fifteenth Air Forces (Osprey Aircraft of the Aces No 30)

P-47 Thunderbolt Aces of the Ninth and Fifteenth

This book charts the story of the lesser known aces who flew the mighty Republic aircraft as a tactical fighter-bomber with the Ninth Air Force, rather than as a long-range escort. It also details the exploits of the Mediterranean-based 325th FG, which was the only P-47 group within the strategic Fifteenth Air Force. Thunderbolt aces within the Ninth Air Force, particularly, were rare, despite some 15 groups flying the fighter. Supporting troops on the ground rather than searching out aerial foes, was the name of the game for the men of the Ninth. However, with the Luftwaffe often opposing such sorties through to April 1945, more than 20 pilots had the opportunity to score five or more kills and 'make ace'.

Airfix Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress 1:72 Plastic Model Kit

Airfix Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress 1:72 Plastic Model

The definitive version of this classic USAAF heavy bomber, the Boeing B-17G incorporated a host of improvements on the earlier models of the Flying Fortress. With thirteen machine-guns and optimized defensive firing positions, massed formations of B-17Gs would pound Axis targets on a daily basis, throwing up as much lead at attacking fighters as they possibly could. Arguably the most visible manifestation of American military might in the Second World War was the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress four engine bomber. Operating in massed formations, these distinctive aircraft were designed to conduct daylight precision bombing missions against strategic enemy targets, with the ultimate aim of literally pounding them into submission. As its name suggests, the Flying Fortress was bristling with defensive armament and it was intended that formations of B-17s could throw so much lead into the air that any attacking enemy aircraft would either be shot down, or simply fly away from their certain demise – although this thinking did not actually materialize in combat, it did help to give the B-17 a fearsome reputation. Without doubt, the definitive version of the Flying Fortress was the B-17G and this last mass-produced version of the aircraft was manufactured in more numbers than all previous...

Airfix A09008 Douglas Dakota MK III with Willys Jeep Military Plastic Model Kit (1:72 Scale)

Airfix A09008 Douglas Dakota MK III with Willys

Described by General Eisenhower as one of the four weapons that helped the Allies to win the Second World War, the Douglas DC3 and its military variant the C-47 Sky train (Dakota in RAF service) has since gone on to be an instantly recognizable symbol of both air travel and the liberation of occupied lands that so characterized the Second World War. Continuing to serve even today in both modernized and original formats the DC3/C-47 is now seen as a pioneer of air travel. The Willys Jeep, officially designated Truck, ½-ton, 4x4, is the best known of all the American vehicles of the Second World War. Originally intended to be a command and reconnaissance car, it became the most versatile of all vehicles. Able to be armed with machine guns and to tow small artillery pieces, the Jeep was essential to the Allied war effort.

P-47 Thunderbolt Aces of the Eighth Air Force (Osprey Aircraft of the Aces No 24)

P-47 Thunderbolt Aces of the Eighth Air Force

The US aviation industry produced three great fighter designs to equip its burgeoning army air force during World War 2, and of this trio, Republic's P-47 Thunderbolt was easily the heaviest. Powered, crucially, by a turbocharged Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp radial engine that produced 2000 hp, the first production fighters reached the 56th FG in June 1942, and six months later the group joined the Eight Air Force in Britain. The arrival of the first P-47Cs in mid-1943 addressed the problem of the aircraft's short combat radius, as this model could be fitted with an external tank. Slowly, as combat tactics evolved in units like the 56th and 78th FGs, pilots learnt how best to fly the Thunderbolt in order to effectively counter the more nimble Luftwaffe fighters.

Airfix Messerschmitt Bf110C 1 72 Scale Plastic Model Airplane A03080A

Airfix Messerschmitt Bf110C 1 72 Scale Plastic Model

Championed by Hermann Goering, the Messerschmitt Bf 110 destroyer, (or heavy fighter) concept was certainly sound in theory, giving these slightly larger aircraft much greater range and devastating firepower. Unfortunately, the increase in size and weight left the destroyers vulnerable to the more manoeuvrable single engine fighters of the RAF. During the late 1930S, it would be difficult to argue against the idea of basically putting two Messerschmitt Bf 109 fighters together to produce one heavy fighter, or destroyer. With greater range and much increased firepower, these fearsome aircraft would surely blast any opponents from the sky and quickly allow German ground forces to conquer even greater amounts of territory. This was the perfectly rational thinking behind the destroyer concept and one which Luftwaffe commander-in-chief Hermann Goering was passionately in favor of. As the Luftwaffe swept through Europe and into France and the low countries, the Bf 110 destroyers proved to be incredibly successful, with their additional firepower proving to be devastatingly effective in the air and during strafing attacks. As the conflict moved on to the massed air attacks against Britain, the confident destroyer crews were in for a rude awakening. When pitted against the fast, agile fi...

Corgi Boys Supermarine Spitfire 60th Anniversary Collection 1:72 Diecast Military Aviation

Corgi Boys Supermarine Spitfire 60th Anniversary Collection 1:72

For young British pilots in the late 1940s, the most exciting and enigmatic aircraft that they could possibly hope to fly was the new Supermarine Spitfire. The absolute pinnacle of aviation technology at that time, the Spitfire was a thoroughbred in every sense of the word and simply a beautiful aeroplane to look at. Just a few short months after the Spitfire entered RAF service, it would be called upon to fight for the very survival of Britain and the free world, as swarms of Luftwaffe aircraft launched massed attacks against RAF airfields and strategic targets across southern England. The handsome Spitfire would have to bare its teeth and take on the feared Messerschmitt Bf 109!.

Corgi Boys P-51D Mustang Lt Julian H Bertram 362nd Fighter Squadron Butch Baby 1:72 Aviation Archive Diecast Replica AA27701 Vehicle

Corgi Boys P-51D Mustang Lt Julian H Bertram

Established at Hamilton Field, California in December 1942, the 362nd Fighter Squadron was predominately made up of pilots and ground personnel recently out of USAAF training schools. Just a few months later in October 1943, the Squadron was ready for overseas deployment to Europe. The Squadron was equipped with various models of the P-51 Mustang and was committed to combat on 11th February 1944. Assigned to VIII Fighter Command, their mission was to fly as escorts for heavy bombers during combat missions over France. Although P-51Ds were manufactured in bare aluminium many fighter groups chose to paint theirs in the field, with 44-14798 being finished in RAF dark green. ‘Butch Baby' was the personal mount of Lt. Julian H Bertram and would finish the War unscathed only to be scrapped in June 1945 following a landing accident at its base at Leiston, UK. Our newly tooled North American Mustangs in the Aviation Archive range (AA27701/2/3) can be displayed ‘in flight' or with the highly detailed landing gear deployed. Also included are two sets of Interchangeable wing flaps allowing the collector to choose between up and down positions.

Airfix Boeing B-17 Fortress MK.III (1:72 Scale) Model

In RAF service, the definitive Boeing B-17G was known as the Fortress III, with 85 aircraft being supplied to the British. Operating mainly in the bomber support role, these aircraft would conduct anti-radar and clandestine operations, designed to confuse and frustrate German nightfighters, allowing more Allied bombers to return unscathed from their latest raid. The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress four engine bomber was an airborne manifestation of American military might in the Second World War. Operating in massed formations, these distinctive aircraft were designed to conduct daylight precision bombing missions, against strategic enemy targets, with the ultimate aim of literally pounding them into submission. The B-17 also saw service with the Royal Air Force during WWII, mainly operating anti-submarine patrols with Coastal Command, but also in a much more covert role. The Fortress Mk.III aircraft o...

Airfix 1:72nd Scale WWII Heinkel HE.III P2 Plastic

Early in the morning of the 26th April 1940, four members of KG 4 took off in their Heinkel He111 P-2 5J+CN from Fernebu, Oslo in Norway. One of three Heinkels tasked with attacking the town of Andalsnes, the bomber was damaged by the guns of HMS Manchester. Unable to keep formation with the other Heinkels the crew were then taken by surprise by two Blackburn Skuas of No. 801 Squadron FAA from HMS Ark Royal. The pilot of Skua A7-A unleashed a hail of machine gun fire on the bomber - killing flight engineer Willi Stock. With one engine failing and the other on fire, pilot Richard Gumbrecht had no choice but to force-land somewhere among the snow covered mountains below. With Stock dead, the remaining three crew members escaped the wreckage and made their way down the mountain. The largely intact Heinkel sat on the mountain for over 30 years, before being recovered and restored by the Norwegian Armed Forces Aircraft Collection. New for 2015, using our new 3D scanning technology, comes the amazing 1:72 Heinkel HEIII P2! Responsible for more damage from strategic bombing than any other aircraft during the Battle of Britain, this super high detailed aircraft has been designed with information never before used in Airfix model design and has produced fantastic results! “A wolf in she...
