Historic Broadcasts

Culled from New York Philharmonic broadcasts spanning 75 years, this remarkable 10-disc compilation testifies to the strong-willed yet chameleon-like orchestra's virtuosity and versatility under a diverse assemblage of podium personalities. Stylistically speaking, the earlier items are the most interesting, revealing, for instance, a more vibrant Otto Klemperer and freer Arturo Toscanini than their later commercial efforts sometimes suggest. Other artists are heard in repertoire which they otherwise didn't record: Fritz Reiner's Brahms 2nd, Leonard Bernstein's Berg and Webern, and a wrenching concert version of Bartók's Bluebeard's Castle under Kubelík's direction, to name but a few. From program notes to transfer quality, not one stone is left unturned to ensure first-rate results. --Jed Distler

This is Leonard Bernstein His Greatest Recordings

This is Leonard Bernstein His Greatest

In this year of Leonard Bernsteins centenary, Sony Classical is pleased to present a special edition of his American Columbia recordings from the 1950s and 60s. Many of the conductor-composers most celebrated interpretations and works are collected here on these 15 carefully chosen original albums. There is, of course, the still-astonishing album that launched Leonard Bernsteins international reputation as the most dynamic and charismatic conductor of his era, Stravinskys Rite of Spring recorded in January 1958 two months after his appointment as the youngest music director in the New York Philharmonics history. Reviewing a 2013 reissue, declared: It has an excitement, spontaneity, and primal fury that no other version quite matches. The Bernstein recording that launched the Mahler Renaissance in the 1960s is also here: his Third Symphony with the New York Philharmonic, which has arguably never been surpassed. Ditto for Carl Nielsen, whose great symphonies Bernstein brought to a wide new public with interpretations like his NYP recording of the Fifth, perhaps the most thrilling account of this 20th-century masterpiece ever committed to disc. His magnificent recording of Nielsens Third with the Royal Danish Orchestra is also included. And while were talking about...

Symphonies and Symphonic Poems [23 CD]

Symphonies and Symphonic Poems [23

This 23 CD box set bears witness to Mehtas work in the recording studio for Decca between May 1965 (Bruckners Ninth Symphony with the Wiener Philharmoniker) and July 1980 (Tchaikovskys Capriccio italien with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra). The bulk of the recordings date from the 1970s, and the period of white-hot inspiration when Mehta achieved and consolidated his international reputation. There are textbook performances here: the orchestral conflicts found Mahlers Second Symphony, for example, or the visionary build-up of internal tension in the final movement of the same composers Third; the highly individual manner in which Mehta plumbs the depths of Beethovens Seventh, and the cycle of Schubert symphonies; the macabre echo of the Trauermarsch in Mahlers Fifth, and the rational and yet sensuous quality of Mehtas responsiveness to Strauss.23 CD Cap-boxBooklet with tracklists and a new note by Massimo Rolando Zegna in English and ItalianDimensions: Dimensions 13.5x12.5x8.5cm / Weight: 0.8kgCD 1Beethoven Symphony no. 7R. Beethoven: The Complete Symphonies New York Philharmonic

Celebrated as an outstanding conductor in an era of great conducting, Bruno Walter favoured the Austro-German repertoire. He sought to penetrate to the core of a composition and, detesting routine performances, continually endeavoured to present a piece as if it were receiving its world premiere.

Leonard Bernstein: The Harvard Lectures

Leonard Bernstein: The Harvard

Leonard Bernstein was invited to become the Charles Eliot Norton Professor of Poetry at Harvard University, Cambridge in 1971. The professorship required Bernstein to live on campus for one school year, counsel students and, most significantly, deliver of a series of six public lectures. Bernstein, a ""Harvard man"" himself, was pleased and honored to become a part of this distinguished tradition. Bernstein began his residency at Harvard in the fall of 1972. He immersed himself in the academic culture with enthusiasm, and his popularity with students resulted in his being named ""Man of the Year"" by Harvard's student newspaper. Because the lectures embraced such a wide variety of disciplines, Bernstein faced the challenge of organizing his ideas into a coherent progression of six talks. Also, every word had to be written out and memorized because each of the lectures was to be presented twice: live at the University at the Harvard Square Theater, Cambridge, and then in a subsequent taping session for television at the WGBH TV Studios, Boston. Bernstein based much of the lectures on the linguistic theories Noam Chomsky set out in his book, ""Language and Mind."" In the first three lectures, Bernstein analyzed music in linguistic terms phonology (sound), syntax (structure) and sem...
