Signed Hank Greenberg Baseball - Rare Inscribed Mint 9 - PSA/DNA Certified - Autographed Baseballs

Signed Hank Greenberg Baseball - Rare Inscribed Mint

Hank Greenberg Rare Signed Inscribed Baseball PSA Mint 9 Autograph 8 Baseball 9 Overall 9 We are proud to present this gorgeous Hank Greenberg single signed baseball, as nice examples have "dried up" in the marketplace. This one sports a wonderful exemplar of his famous sprawling signature, measuring over 3-inches long. His autograph became smaller and a bit cryptic in later years. However, this one is quite typical of his earlier style when it flowed quite nicely. Furthermore, "Hammerin' Hank" has offered the inscription "Detroit Tigers" directly below his signature on the coveted sweetspot. Greenberg almost never offered inscriptions with his autograph, for no reason other than the practice was uncommon at the time. Nonetheless, the inscription makes this particular piece quite rare, and more significant than the generic single singed ball. We have never owned such an item from Greenberg, and further in our research we could only find three other inscribed baseballs that sold in auction. This Official American League Baseball (Brown, pres.) was only manufactured from 1985-1989. Since Greenberg passed in 1986, this baseball was signed in 1985-1986. Most surviving examples of Greenberg singles, not already squirreled away in advanced collections, have not fared well in terms of q...

Hank Greenberg: The Story of My Life

Hank Greenberg: The Story of My

This autobiography of Hank Greenberg tells of one of the most dynamic and inspiring stories in the history of baseball. The son of Eastern European parents, he rose from the streets of New York to rank among the greatest home-run hitters of the game, and became the first Jewish player to be elected to the Hall of Fame. Along the way he challenged Babe Ruth's record of 60 home runs in a season; led the Detroit Tigers to four pennants; fiercely stood up to anti-Semitic slurs, insults, and assaults; and was one of the first major leaguers to enlist in the military at the outbreak of World War II. Hank Greenberg's extraordinary life in baseball-playing with and against Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Ted Williams, Charlie Gehringer, Joe DiMaggio, Dizzy Dean, and Bob Feller—combined the uncommon courage, dignity, strength and, to be sure, humor, in the face of formidable odds.

Hank Greenberg: The Hero Who Didn't Want to Be One (Jewish Lives)

Hank Greenberg: The Hero Who Didn't Want to

One of the reasons baseball fans so love the sport is that it involves certain physical acts of beauty. And one of the most beautiful sights in the history of baseball was Hank Greenberg's swing. His calmly poised body seemed to have some special set of springs with a trigger release that snapped his arms and swept the bat through the air with the clean speed and strength of a propeller. But what is even more extraordinary than his grace and his power is that in Detroit of 1934, his swing or its absence became entwined with American Jewish history. Though Hank Greenberg was one of the first players to challenge Babe Ruth's single-season record of sixty home runs, it was the game Greenberg did not play for which he is best remembered. With his decision to sit out a 1934 game between his Tigers and the New York Yankees because it fell on Yom Kippur, Hank Greenberg became a hero to Jews throughout America. Yet, as Kurlansky writes, he was the quintessential secular Jew, and to celebrate him for his loyalty to religious observance is to ignore who this man was. In Hank GreenbergMark Kurlansky explores the truth behind the slugger's legend: his Bronx boyhood, his spectacular discipline as an aspiring ballplayer, the complexity of his decision not to play on Yom Kippur, and the cultura...

Hank Greenberg in 1938: Hatred and Home Runs in the Shadow of War

Hank Greenberg in 1938: Hatred and Home Runs

“Hammerin’” Hank Greenberg was coming off a stellar season where he’d hit 40 home runs and 184 RBIs, becoming only the thirteenth player to ever hit 40 or more homers (and one of only four players to have 40 or more home runs and 175 or more RBIs in a season). Even with his success at the plate, neither Greenberg nor the rest of the world could have expected what was about to happen in 1938. From his first day in the big leagues, the New York-born Greenberg had dealt with persecution for being Jewish. From teammate Jo-Jo White asking where his horns were to the verbal abuse from bigoted fans and the media, the 6-foot-3 slugger always did his best to shut the noise out and concentrate on baseball. But in 1938, that would be more difficult then he could have ever imagined. While Greenberg was battling at the plate, his people overseas were dealing with a completely different battle. Adolf Hitler, who had been chancellor of Germany since 1933, had taken direct control of the country’s military in February of ’38. He then began his methodic takeover of all neighboring countries, spreading Nazism and the early stages of World War II and the Holocaust.Hank Greenberg in 1938 chronicles the events of 1938, both on the baseball diamond and the streets of Europe. As Greenberg’s...

Hank Greenberg: The Hero of Heroes

Hank Greenberg: The Hero of

Baseball in the 1930s was more than a national pastime; it was a cultural touchstone that galvanized communities and gave a struggling country its heroes despite the woes of the Depression. Hank Greenberg, one of the most exciting sluggers in baseball history, gave the people of Detroit a reason to be proud. But America was facing more than economic hardship. With the Nazis gaining power across Europe, political and social tensions were approaching a boiling point. As one of the few Jewish athletes competing nationally, Hank Greenberg became not only an iconic ball player, but also an important and sometimes controversial symbol of Jewish identity and the American immigrant experience. When Hank joined the Detroit Tigers in 1933, they were headed for a dismal fifth-place season finish. The following year, with Hank leading the charge, they were fighting off the Yankees for the pennant. As his star ascended, he found himself cheered wherever he went. But there were other noises also. On and off the field, he met with taunts and anti-Semitic threats. Yet the hardship only drove him on to greater heights, sharing the spotlight with the most legendary sluggers of the day, including Babe Ruth, Jimmie Foxx, and Lou Gehrig.Hank Greenberg offers an intimate account of the man’s life on a...

BASEBALL SLUGGERS ~ MICKEY MANTLE ~ MEL OTT ~ ROY CAMANELLA ~ HANK GREENBERG #4083a Pane of 20 x 39¢ US Postage Stamps

BASEBALL SLUGGERS ~ MICKEY MANTLE ~ MEL OTT

COMPLETE PANE OF 20 NEW POSTAGE STAMPS. ~ In 2006 the USPS honored these four Baseball Sluggers. Most players only get a hit 25 percent of the time (a batting average of .250). The ball players honored on the "Baseball Sluggers" stamps all have higher batting averages: Roy Campanella - .276; Hank Greenberg - .313; Mel Ott - .304; and Mickey Mantle - .298. Philadelphia native Roy Campanella was a catcher in the American Negro Leagues and Major League Baseball. Campanella signed a Brooklyn Dodgers' contract in 1946. A smart and skilled catcher, he was also impressive at bat. He averaged more than 85 runs batted-in per year over the course of his career. Campanella played every All-Star Game from 1949 to 1956 and was in 5 World Series. In 1969, he was the second African-American player inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. After a car accident in 1958, Roy Campanella was paralyzed from the chest down and confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life. Henry Benjamin Greenberg, baseball's first Jewish superstar, born in New York. A powerful slugger, Greenberg earned the nickname "Hammerin' Hank." Even though he had only nine full seasons, he had a career total of 331 home runs and averaged more than 141 runs batted-in per year played. Melvin Thomas Ott was born in Gretna, Louis...

Hammerin' Hank Greenberg: Baseball Pioneer

Hammerin' Hank Greenberg: Baseball

The first Jewish baseball hall-of-famer, Hank Greenberg battled anti-Semitism on and off the field. He was raised in New York City, the son of Romanian-Jewish immigrants, and went on to become a baseball legend. This thought-provoking biography follows him from his service during World War II, through his long career with the Detroit Tigers—where the moniker Hammerin' Hank came to life—and finally to his role as a baseball executive. Readers will experience the prejudice Greenberg endured, even as he made his way into the annals of baseball history: two-time American League MVP, 331 home runs, and first Jewish baseball player inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Archival photos add to the appeal of this Sydney Taylor Honor Book.

The Game Must Go On: Hank Greenberg, Pete Gray, and the Great Days of Baseball on the Home Front in WWII

The Game Must Go On: Hank Greenberg, Pete

On December 7, 1941, as the battleships in Pearl Harbor smoldered, one of the most powerful athletes in America, Detroit Tigers MVP Hank Greenberg, made a tumultuous decision - to leave the baseball field for the field of war.   His decision left baseball's place during the war uncertain as more and more ballplayers, famous and unknown alike, put off their careers to go into the fight. President Roosevelt was faced with a difficult decision: stop all professional baseball for the good of the victory, but in doing so, risk losing a vital part of morale. He decided that, whatever it took, The Game Must Go On.   This is the story of American baseball during World War II - of both the players who left to join the war and the ones who struggled to keep the game alive on the home front. Taking the place of the big shots turned soldiers, sailors and combat pilots were misfit replacement players. While Greenberg represented the player who served, Pete Gray symbolized the player who stayed. He was a one-armed outfielder who overcame insurmountable odds to become a professional.   John Klima drops us straight into 1941 to 1945. Culminating in the 1945 pennace race, where Greenberg and Gray's paths memorably crossed, Klima's story shows us how World War II made the country come of age...
